Today, join me on the hypocrite highway. I’ve got some Kansas, Boston, Tom Petty, Steve Earle and Benny Goodman on the soundtrack and lots of sparkling water and Cherry Coke Zero and beef jerky and moon pies. Feel free to bring some of your favorite tunes.
What’s going to be the central issue of the November election? Abortion. And it’s particularly topical now as Republicans brace themselves for retribution. They’re starting to realize that they’re backing head-first into a whirling helicopter blade like that dude in Raiders of the Lost Ark. And instead of trying to learn why they keep losing, they just scream about voter fraud. The Republican party died in 2016 and current events are just those weird post-mortem movements. MAGA is like the monkey’s paw. Make America Great Again! GOP implodes. We’re so sorry, Uncle Albert.
“Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do with one if I caught it! You know, I just… do things.”
Lots of talk about the near-total abortion ban in Arizona (abortion is allowed to save the life of the mother), where the state Supreme Court reinstated an 1864 law that was around before it was even a state (Arizona joined the States on Feb. 14, 1912), when doctors didn’t believe in washing their hands and probably believed in bodily humors. Kari Lake is running for one of Arizona’s Senate seats, and she tipped the GOP’s hand a while ago.
“Obviously, I think Roe v. Wade should be overturned and I think the Supreme Court, I have a good feeling that they’re going to do the right thing this time… We have a great law on the books right now if that happens, we will be a state where we will not be taking the lives of our unborn anymore.”
And this: “My personal belief is that all life matters, all life counts, and all life is precious, and I don’t believe in abortion. I think the older law [the 1864 one] is going to go into effect. That’s what I believe will happen… I believe life begins at conception… I don’t think abortion pills should be legal.”
Wonder if she believes in maternity and paternity leave? Or subsidized daycare. Or pre-and post-natal care.
